GLENDALOUGH

INTRODUCTION

Step back in history when you travel to Glendalough, which is a glacial valley located in County Wicklow. The area is well known as an early monastic settlement, established in the early Medieval times by St. Kevin. Many of the surviving structures and ruins that you’ll come across in Glendalough date back to as early as the 10th century.

The monastery here survived until the Norman invasion in 1214A.D., but you can still see many amazing sights. For instance, the cathedral, round tower, kitchen, gateway, St. Kevin’s Cross, trinity church, the priest house, the caher, and other structures remain today. Not only is Glendalough known for its monastic history, but the area is also renowned as a stunning place for a hike. Many rock climbers come to the area to enjoy the scenery and thrill of climbing here. Glendabough upper lake also attracts many visitors each year for its beautiful views.

Green Isle Travel offers tours here when the weather is right, often in the months of May, June, October, and November. This is an exquisite opportunity to see the Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt House and Gardens, and other area hotspots.
